Winter MRAP Training

Who this course is for:

This course is for officers who have completed SWATMOD’s Basic MRAP/Armored Vehicle Operations Course, or an MRAP Drivers Training course elsewhere (proof required) and want to further their knowledge and experience of MRAPs while driving in winter conditions.

The purpose of our training course is to offer an in-depth program that doesn’t exist in the Midwest to thoroughly train law enforcement officers how to operate military type vehicles that departments obtained through the 1033 program.  This course will enforce officer safety through education of the vehicle(s), specifically their own vehicle(s) that they use, as well as the possible dangers while operating such vehicle in winter conditions.  By the end of the course, each member will be capable and confident in performing operations in snow and on ice with their MRAP, and will know how to properly care for and maintain their emergency vehicle(s).

Upon completion of the classroom instruction, the student will be able to:

  • Conduct standard PMCS of the vehicle.  (Handouts on this)

  • Discuss the vehicle’s level of protection, safety, and equipment; as well as how to load and secure their vehicle

  • Determine essential driving skills and proper maneuvering of vehicle while operating on snow and ice

  • Determine warnings and cautions of risk reduction for rollovers and tipping while operating the vehicle

Upon completion of the skills training, the student will be able to:

  • Complete a vehicle walk around naming components and explaining their proper usage

  • Differentiate the location and function of controls and indicators

  • Point out the proper emergency egress of the vehicle

  • Complete a pre and post operation vehicle preventative maintenance check inspection

Upon completion of the vehicle driving training, the student will be able to:

  • Operate the vehicle properly in winter conditions

  • Explain best practices for transmission/engine braking procedures

  • Operate the vehicle safely off road on various terrain with snow and ice

  • Operate the vehicle on rural roadways in winter conditions
